Obama Date Night

Keeping A Campaign Promise Is Great

President Obama made quite a few promises during his campaign including taking his wife to a Broadway show. Good for him. He kept that one last night and in the process has sparked debate (at least for me) regarding the appropriateness of the trip.

Now President Bush spent many a day at his Crawford, Texas ranch and at Camp David, and there is no doubt that the stresses of the presidency requires some down time.

However, at a time when the economy in cities such as New York are in the crapper, GM is about to file for bankruptcy, many people don't have the money for a movie let alone a fancy dinner and a Broadway show and a presidential visit turns the City into a tangled mess, is this an appropriate thing to do at this time?

What do you think?

President Obama: How Do You Get A Schoolteacher This Mad?

Outrage Over The First 100 Days Of The Obama Administration

The Obama apologists love to invoke the first 100 days argument. That is, how can you expect miracles in 100 days when the president "inherited" the huge problems left by the Bush administration. Now I have my problems with the Obama administration, some of which I detail below, but nothing like those expressed in the letter following the picture of the one room schoolhouse.

Number one, as my expectations from a president go, I don't give a timeline of when I expect accomplishments to be seen. I just want to see steady progress being made.

Number two I also don't like to hear constant excuses as to why things are as they are and how the problems are so difficult. When a man or a woman chooses to run for office, they know what they are signing on for. Just do it.

Finally, as an observer of the President of the United States of America, the most powerful nation on earth, I don't like to see them going around the world apologizing for what it is we do, bowing to foreign leaders (although not all foreign leaders if you know what I mean) and cozying up to leaders such as Hugo Chavez.

This is all separate from his foreign policy charade of appeasement and serious "negotiations" with rogue countries that does nothing except buy these rogue nations time to accomplish whatever it is that rogue nations want to accomplish.

The Anger Of A Fourth Grade School Teacher

What does it take to stir the ire of a schoolteacher? How do you manufacture outrage that erupts into an open letter to President Obama. I guess I will step aside and let you read it for yourself:

Winton School House

Mr. Obama:

I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on your recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me personally.

You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the United States of America . You are responsible to the citizens of the United States. You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth.

I personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of Europe? Are you brain dead?

What do you think the Marshall Plan was all about? Do you not understand or know the history of the 20th century?

Where do you get off telling a Muslim country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country? Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the principles governing this country, at least until you came along, come directly from this heritage. Do you not understand this?

Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to all Americans. Our President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the king of Saudi Arabia. You don't show Great Britain, our best and one of our oldest allies, the respect they deserve yet you bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia. How dare you, sir! How dare you!

You can't find the time to visit the graves of our greatest generation because you don't want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a mosque in Turkey. You offended our dead and every veteran when you give the Germans more respect than the people who saved the German people from themselves. What's the matter with you?

I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of yourselves, all of you. You are so self-righteously offended by the big bankers and the American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the real thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do you intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt it.

What about the U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to their staff members - on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a 17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my employer. You haven't said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn't!

Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that's $45 million more than the AIG bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million - not a bad take. Who authorized that and why haven't you expressed your outrage at this group who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right now.

I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we are getting increasingly fed up with all of you.

I also want you to know that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive to every one of my sensibilities.

I promise you that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two terms destroying my beautiful country.

Sincerely,

Ms Kathleen Lyday

The Post Turtle: How Did It Get There?

An Old Political Joke

This is a joke that has been around for some time, and through the years the names have been changed, not to protect the innocent, but to reflect the political environment of the time. It's almost like that old game of Ad-libs, but much more serious.

In this version, we are using the name Obama.

"While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who's hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our president.

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a 'Post Turtle''.
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was.
The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, and he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb a_s put him up there to begin with."

As time goes on and we see more and more of the moves that President Obama makes or does not make, are there beginning to be second thoughts on the part of some of his supporters? Sphere: Related Content

Is Rush Limbaugh The Titular Head Of The Republican Party?

All Hail The King

Now for full disclosure I listen to Rush, enjoy the show, agree with some but not all of the things that he says, and certainly do not consider him to be the leader of the Republican Party, titular or otherwise. The masses that don't listen to him dislike or even hate him out of hand, primarily because they are led to that conclusion by the main stream media, not to mention the many politicians leaning left.

"Obama, Begala, and Carville vs. Rush (National review Online) How curious: Free-thinking commentators Paul Begala and James Carville have each set their sights on Rush Limbaugh in recent days. Begala shamefully called Rush a "corpulent drug addict" during a Situation Room segment on Friday, and today Carville appeared on American Morning to tout his new column attacking Rush and mocking the GOP for being beholden to a radio talk show host. Coincidentally, these media analysts just happened to pick up on the exact same meme President Obama conspicuously initiated late last month, when he scolded Republicans for Rush's undue influence over the party. Boy, these on-message talking points are so well-coordinated, it's almost as if Begala, Carville, and oh, I don't know, the President's Chief of Staff hold daily conference calls, or something."

Thanks to commentators like James Carville and Paul Begala, Rush has become a marketing tool of the left that have somehow anointed him as the spiritual and philosophical leader of the Republican Party, picking perhaps the most radioactive public figure that they possibly could to try and turn into the face of the Republican Party. They have made him the basis of Democrat talking points, with the typical American Democrat and particularly liberal Democrat buying in hook, line and sinker.

Rush Limbaugh by Ian Marsden

Now anyone that listens to talk radio with anything close to something resembling an open mind, would certainly not agree with all of what anyone has to say. They would also not disagree with everything. You take from it what you will, and that will form the basis for constructive debate. Not the case with what appears to be a laser guided marketing campaign that must have started at the upper echelon of the Democrat Party. It is designed to tear the Republican product down.

Using my humble blog as a small sample of the anecdotal evidence of the Rush obsession, the comments that I get both here and primarily in the discussion groups that I copy it to are all Rush, all the time. Let's look at some examples:

- i guess that's why this blog keeps getting shorter...(your saying the same s..t)are you becoming the next rush limbaugh? it seems so...you are all about hype and sensationalism...

- i assume you are miriam limbaugh..correct?..

- i find my comments similar to the minority leader of the gop..rush limbaugh

- ...The only people putting politics ahead of country nowadays, ARE right-wing Republicans and their Leader, Rush Limbaugh...

- ...I understand. I listen to your leader, Boss Rush. The GOP wants Obama to fail. After all, if his policies end up showing some progress over the long haul, what will happen to the party that got us here?...

- ...heavens to Michael Milkin, say it aint so! Really, there was never a need to form the SEC, pass '33, '34 & '40 Acts or Sarbanes-Oxley because, you know, we can trust Corporate America to be honest, ethical and hire all those people who are out of work right now. Just ask Rush! ...

- ...It seems the only people who believe the Obama is God thing are those ranting that he should have the God-like powers to change in 45 days, what has been screwed in 8 years. OK sure. I guess that's what those who wear the Rush is God goggles call anyone who hopes he succeeds. nice. ...

- ...well said Douglas. What ARE the poor neo-cons and Rush Disciples going to do if things stabilize and even show modest improvement under Obama? Who will they blame for all their failed policies and archaic ideologies then?...

The Axis Of Idiots

Provided by a friend of The Political and Financial Markets Commentator at http://politicsandfinance.blogspot.com

(Too bad we don't have folks on Capitol Hill willing to speak out like this. J.D. Pendry is a retired Marine Sergeant Major who writes for Random House.

He is eloquent, and as taught by the Marines, he seldom beats around the bush!)

'THE Axis of Idiots'

Jimmy Carter, you are the father of the Islamic Nazi movement. You threw the Shah under the bus, welcomed the Ayatollah home, and then lacked the spine to confront the terrorists when they took our embassy and our people hostage. You're the runner-in-chief.

Bill Clinton, you played ring around the Lewinsky while the terrorists were at war with us. You got us into a fight with them in Somalia and then you ran from it. Your weak-willed responses to the U.S.S. Cole and the First Trade Center Bombing and Our Embassy Bombings emboldened the killers. Each time you failed to respond adequately, they grew bolder, until 9/11/2001.

John Kerry, dishonesty is your most prominent attribute. You lied about American Soldiers in Vietnam . Your military service, like your life, is more fiction than fact. You've accused our military of terrorizing women and children in Iraq . You called Iraq the wrong war, wrong place, wrong time, the same words you used to describe Vietnam . You're a fake. You want to run from Iraq and abandon the Iraqis to murderers just as you did to the Vietnamese. Iraq, like Vietnam, is another war that you were for, before you were against it.

John Murtha, you said our military was broken. You said we can't win militarily in Iraq . You accused United States Marines of cold-blooded murder without proof and said we should redeploy to Okinawa . Okinawa, John ? And the Democrats call you their military expert! Are you sure you didn't suffer a traumatic brain injury while you were off building your war hero resume? You're a sad, pitiable, corrupt and washed up politician. You're not a Marine, sir. You wouldn't amount to a good pimple on a real Marine's butt. You're a phony and a disgrace. Run away, John

Dick Durbin, you accused our Soldiers at Guantanamo of being Nazis, tenders of Soviet style gulags and as bad as the regime of Pol Pot , who murdered two million of his own people after your party abandoned Southeast Asia to the Communists. Now you want to abandon the Iraqis to the same fate. History was not a good teacher for you, was it? Lord help us! See Dick run.

Ted Kennedy, for days on end you held poster-sized pictures from Abu Ghraib in front of any available television camera. Al Jazeera quoted you saying that Iraqi's torture chambers were open under new management. Did you see the news, Teddy? The Islamic Nazis demonstrated another beheading for you. If you truly supported our troops, you'd show the world poster-sized pictures of that atrocity and demand the annihilation of it. Your legislation stripping support from the South Vietnamese led to a communist victory there. You're a bloated, drunken fool bent on repeating the same historical blunder that turned freedom-seeking people over to homicidal, genoc idal maniacs. To paraphrase Jo hn Murtha, all while sitting on your wide, gin-soaked rear-end in Washington

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Carl Levine, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Russ Feingold, Hillary Clinton, Pat Leahy, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, the Hollywood Leftist morons, et al, ad nauseam: Every time you stand in front of television cameras and broadcast to the Islamic Nazis that we went to war because our President lied, that the war is wrong and our Soldiers are torturers, that we should leave Iraq, you give the Islamic butchers - the same ones that tortured and mutilated American Soldiers - cause to think that we'll run away again, and all they have to do is hang on a little longer. It is inevitable that we, the infidels, will have to defeat the Islamic jihadists.. Better to do it now on their turf, than later on ours after they have gained both strength and momentum.

American news media, the New York Times particularly: Each time you publish stories about national defense secrets and our intelligence gathering methods, you become one united with the sub-human pieces of camel dung that torture and mutilate the bodies of American Soldiers. You can't strike up the courage to publish cartoons, but you can help Al Qaeda destroy my country. Actually, you are more dangerous to us than Al Qaeda is. Think about that each time you face Mecca to admire your Pulitzer.
?

You are America 's 'AXIS OF IDIOTS.' Your Collective Stupidity will destroy us. Self-serving politics and terrorist-abetting news scoops are more important to you than our national security or the lives of innocent civilians and Soldiers. It bothers you that defending ourselves gets in the way of your elitist sport of politics and your ignorant editorializing. There is as much blood on your hands as is on the hands of murdering terrorists. Don't ever doubt that. Your frolics will only serve to extend this war as they extended Vietnam .. If you want our Soldiers home as you claim, knock off the crap and try supporting your country ahead of supporting your silly political aims and aiding our enemies.

Yes, I'm questioning your patriotism. Your loyalty ends with self. I'm also questioning why you're stealing air that decent Americans could be breathing. You don't deserve the protection of our men and women in uniform. You need to run away from this war, this country. Leave the war to the people who have the will to see it through and the country to people who are willing to defend it.

Our country has two enemies:Those who want to destroy us from the outside and those who attempt it from within.

Semper Fi,

What Will Save Our Economy?

Mortgage Foreclosure Solutions House in chains

How Do We Get Ourselves Out Of This Crisis?

I have been accused by some readers of being a "Monday morning quartback", of critisizing and not offering solutions and of getting the facts wrong about why we are in the mess we are in. The fact of the matter is that the only one in that list that I am actually guilty of is not being able to offer a credible solution to a problem that is slowly sucking the country and the world down.

Now I am a pretty smart guy, but not smart enough to have the answer to a problem that the "best" minds on Wall Street created (of course with the help of the politicians of both party's), and that the "best" minds on Wall Street, Washington, academia and elsewhere can't seem to solve.

If only they had used their power for good instead of evil.

In any event, as I have mentioned before when it comes to macro-economic issues as well as the inner workings of markets, I find Jim Cramer to be an extremely knowledgable source. Not the greatest stock picker in the world, but that's alright.

These are his thoughts on how we can get out of this problem, which is much more definitive than the ever changing drivel that keeps coming out of Washington.

Jim Cramer

Love him or hate him, the man has actionable and definitive ideas based on an extremely extensive and successful background on Wall Street and as an observer of the markets and economy.

"According to Cramer, neither nationalization, which does too much, or euthanasia, which does too little, will work to save the financial system. He said what will fix it, however, would be offering 40-year, 4% fixed rate mortgages to everyone, especially to those whose mortgages are based on current appraisals. He again advocated forbearance for the banks, with no "mark-to-market" rules enforced.

Cramer said we simply cannot let the chips fall where they may, and the alternative of nationalizing will wipe out the preferred
stock and so much more."

This is a short synopsis of his idea, but to me it sounds as if it makes more sense than any of the start and stop plans that we have gotten out of Washington so far. I know the same critics will say that Obama has now ony been in office for _____ days, but Tim Geithner has been on the scene for a lot longer than that (the guy the administration just had to have despite his tax problems), as have the members of congress, and all of them still can't seem to be able to grab their own a___s with both hands.

Maybe they should bring in some new outside advisors. Sphere: Related Content

Taliban Continued With An Iranian Spin

Taliban Continued With An Iranian Spin

Concern Over The Spread Of The Taliban

In my blog yesterday I discussed the spread of the Taliban from tribal regions to Pakistan proper, and the danger that this presents in a country whose government is fragile at best. The thinking is that with nuclear weapons under the control of some members of government who may be sympathetic to the Taliban, this is a major concern.

Some who responded to me on this questioned whether my concern for our safety from without was warranted. Where was my proof that there was any reason to be worried? As if 9/11 and the documented attacks before it were not enough, what of the desire of Iran to go nuclear? Is this a figment of our imagination? Take a look at the map and notice where it is that Iran sits. What country's does it border?

Americans have notoriously short memories, and after all 9/11 is almost 8 years removed and we have not had any repeat performances, due in large part to the actions of the Bush administration. That in no way means that we are out of the woods. Far from it.

The Obama Administration Iran Plan

In a realization of one of the fears during the campaign season, this is what it appears that the Obama administration plans to do with Iran:

"On Wednesday — less than 24 hours after his inauguration — the Obama White House Web site announced, inter alia, that they will engage in “tough and direct” diplomacy with Iran “without preconditions” and that he intends to use “the power of American diplomacy” to deal with “Iran’s illicit nuclear program, support for terrorism and threats towards Israel.” (Fox Forum).

Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Are we going to sit at a table and negotiate in good faith with Ahmadinejad? Why don't we include North Korea and Venezuela as well while we are at it. How can you negotiate with documented liars who have stated that their goal is to wipe one of the parties in the negotiation off of the face of the earth.

People can sign anything they want, but if you are fairly sure that they will not adhere to any of it, then what is the point other than a public relations victory at home.

Gitmo, The Taliban, Nukes and You

 Taliban Personified?

The Plan To Shut Gitmo Down May Run Into A Headwind While The Taliban Has Not Gone Away, Far from It

In what can only be termed as an extremely disturbing situation in Pakistan, the Taliban is becoming a stronger and stronger influence, not only in the tribal areas but now deeper into the heart of the country. In a front page article in the Sunday New York Times, this penetration and the accompanying spread of terror and brutal punishment for the "violation" of its' own interpretation of how life should be is showing no signs of abating. To the contrary it would seem to be gaining momentum.

What this means for not only the United States but for all of the world is that this spread of the Talibans power, the fear of the politicians and security forces to stand up to it as well as the uncertainty of who in government is actually sympathetic to the Taliban, all places a nuclear arsenal in unknown hands.

This is an area that the Obama administration needs to address immediately. We know that these weapons would not only be coveted, but if obtained would no doubt be attempted to be used.

A Possible Monkey Wrench In The Plans To Close Gitmo

In a story in Newsweek, a Pentagon report that is due to be declassified will reportedly show that some of the detainees that have been released from Guantanamo have gone back to their terroristic ways. If in fact this is the case, can the Obama administration take the chance that a newly released captive perpetrates an attack on us or on our allies. I don't think they can.

For the Obama administration, getting the economy back on track is critical, but let's not forget the dangers from without that have never gone away!

Would You Hire This Man To Do Your Taxes?

Not The Poster Child For Turbo Tax

When asked if he was prompted during his computerized tax preparation to account for the taxes that he neglected to pay, Tim Geithner answered the answer that many people under oath, who could possibly know the truth but not want to tell it use: "To the best of my recollection, I don't think I was."

If only the rest of us had the same luxury that nominees to these exclusive clubs as well as the current members seem to get. Takes me back to "it depends on what your definition of is , is." We rank and file citizens do not have the same ability to use the slip and dodge and get away with it.

If you are a comedy fan you will remember the line in the movie Dodgeball, "if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." For the most part Geithner did not even have to dodge feathers or softballs.

More than one of the members of the committee said words to the effect of being able to look past these tax mistakes because Geithner is the right man for the job (Senator Jon Kyl was an exception who asked strong questions).

Geithner himself said more than once I believe, "It is my mistake and my responsibility." Oh, OK. Never mind then.

Is He The Right Man For The Job?

President Obama, in picking Geithner to become Treasury Secretary, is "handing the post to a primary architect of the Bush administration's response to the financial crisis...".

Putting all of the tax issues aside, the actual key question is does the handling of the financial crisis, that he had such a critical hand in, and which shows little signs of abating, tell us that he is indeed the right man for the job. If he is in fact confirmed, as he no doubt will be because ethics are usually not an impediment to government service, I hope to hell that he is!

The Inauguration Is Over, Time To Get To Work

The Inauguration Is History, Time To Get To Work

Market Update: As if to emphasize the urgency to get our economic problems fixed, the stock market took a sizable hit Tuesday, as Citigroup (C) traded under $3, Bank of Amercia (BAC) under $5.50 and State Street Bank (STT) was down close to 60%. The VIX, a measure of fear in the market was up over 10 points or 20%. It's definitely time for some kind of change!

The Festivities And The Honeymoon Are Over!

Moving, Historic, Joyous, etc.

These fawning descriptions of the inauguration of Obama from our "unbiased" news reporters are all well and good. The comparisons to where we were in terms of race relations and where we are now are great, but at this point irrelevant. Bottom line. He is now President and will be judged on one thing, and one thing only. Performance. Let's see him perform.

It is now Wednesday and the pomp and circumstance are a thing of the past. The inaugural address with all of its' flowery words and promises is in the record books. The inaugural balls and parties are done and the hangovers are being dealt with. It is now time, as they say in show business to "get this show on the road"

Let's Implement The Change And Fresh Ideas

Swept into power by promises of "change" (although his circle of advisers represents anything but. Mostly more of the same old tired Washington retreads) and "yes we can", he has precious little time to get done what needs to be done. Primarily that would be the righting of the U.S. economy and a continuation of whatever policies have kept us safe since September 11th.

The accolades and ring kissing are behind us. The starting gate has opened and the announcer has said "They're Off". Although he will be given every benefit of the doubt by the liberal leaning media, they will, as the media does, turn on him in a split second if and when he falters.

All of that said, what is it that the American public wants him to accomplish from all of the things that he promised that he would:

  • Ensure all children have health insurance 73%

  • Double production of alternative energy 70%

  • Reduce health care costs for families 70%

  • Enact major spending program on infrastructure 60%

  • Cut taxes for 95% of working families 57%

  • Withdraw most troops from Iraq within 16 months 51%

  • Increase military strength in Afghanistan 43%

  • Lift restrictions on government funded stem-cell research 42%

  • Close Guantanamo 32%

  • Make it easier for unions to organize 28%

(USA Today/Gallup poll)

It's a short honeymoon Mr. President. Let's get this show on the road.
